Info for Landowners

Welcome, landowners, and thank you for your interest in promoting outdoor recreation, by allowing our cross-country ski and snowshoeing trails to cross your property. The entire network of trails is on private property, including yours. We are indebted to you for your generosity and will work with you to make the relationship positive and fruitful for everyone.

As a landowner, you may have some questions about what is expected of you, what to expect from the volunteers of Hartland Winter Trails, and about hosting recreation trails on your property. Below are a few frequently asked questions; if you have further questions, feel free to contact us.

Q: What happens if someone gets hurt while recreating on my property? Am I liable?

A: The Vermont legislature recognizes that it is important for private property to remain open for recreation. To that end, they enacted legislation designed to limit the landowner’s liability. The full text of Vermont Statutes Annotated, Title 12, Chapter 203, is available from the State’s website.

Q: When is the trail open?

A: The trails are nominally open only during the winter months, when there is snow cover.
